Lewis Hamilton called his first drive in a Ferrari “one of the best feelings” of his life, fulfilling a childhood dream. The 40-year-old British driver, who recently joined Ferrari, completed 30 laps in foggy weather at the team’s private track in Fiorano, Italy. His new two-year contract with Ferrari is worth over £100 million.

Hamilton tested a 2023 Ferrari model, the latest car he is permitted to use. He will drive next at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya before official pre-season testing begins in Bahrain on February 26. Reflecting on his career, Hamilton said, “I’ve had many special moments, but driving a Ferrari for the first time today was incredible. Starting the car and driving out of the garage gave me the same excitement as my first Formula 1 test in 2007.”

After leaving Mercedes last year, Hamilton spent a busy week meeting his new Ferrari team in Maranello. Ahead of his first test, he shared a photo on Instagram wearing Ferrari’s red race suit, which received 1.5 million likes in an hour. He also revealed a yellow helmet, inspired by his early racing days. Fans gathered at Fiorano to watch him drive, and his family, including his father who supported his career, joined him.

Hamilton aims to win an eighth world title, a record in Formula 1. “I knew Ferrari’s fans were passionate, but experiencing it as a driver is inspiring. Their energy motivates me,” he said.

After 12 years with Mercedes, his first race for Ferrari will be in Melbourne on March 16. Before that, he will present Ferrari’s 2024 car with teammate Charles Leclerc on February 19 in Maranello. Leclerc, who drove 14 laps after Hamilton’s test, called it a “special moment” for the team. Both drivers are eager to prepare for the new season.
